Bryant Nagel Galleries Event @ Bryant Nagel Galleries Tickets
Oct 4 @ 5:00 pm – Oct 20 @ 6:00 pm

“Martin Blundell: The Western Land” opens with an Artist Reception 5-8 p.m. October 4th and an Artist Talk at 5:45. Thereafter, daily through October 20th. Showcased are the works of this accomplished landscape artist who so successfully captures the grand vistas, plateaus, rock faces and vast skies unique to Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. His paintings are executed with impasto brushwork and pallet knife application of oil paint. It was his training in printmaking that focused Blundell’s expertise with textures, allowing his painting to create a rich surface quality supported by saturated color.
“I’ve experienced moments of awe-inspiring light at sunrise and sunset, and sensational atmospheric changes during storms. I’m also mesmerized by the commonplace: a field, a farm, or a structure. Capturing those moments inspire my images and paintings. The calm transitions of the seasons motivate me to explore the relationships of color, while I rely heavily on intuition to guide the outcome of my paintings.”
Blundell works from a loft studio in his home, a bright space with clerestory windows, angled ceilings, and white walls. “It has a sculptural volume, that is interesting to work in.” he notes. Working from drawings, photographs and comp studies, Blundell generally has two paintings in process at any time and his studio provides ample room to view his works in their various stages of completion. Though Blundell begins work in the mornings, painting through the afternoon, he also may paint well into the night. “Many times, creative moments cannot be forced, so it is nice to have my studio close by.”
As Blundell notes, “Awareness is a beginning place for art making. Consciousness of the environment, the landscape, figure, interiors etc. can start an investigation of visual possibilities. … Through this myriad of input and translation we experience moments of creativity that are unique, recorded by the physical events of paint and brush. We compose, we organize, we recapitulate, we find the line, and reach the color and value in successive applications until we resign to a completion. Finally, we hope to achieve a visually poetic and autonomous result.”
Blundell’s studies in art begin early, winning him recognition as a Utah High School Sterling Scholar in art. He went on to graduate with honors from the University of Utah where he received a BFA in printmaking and drawing. When he began showing his fine art, awards in local and national competitions brought him continuing acclaim. Martin Blundell has received acknowledgments and awards from the Utah Watercolor Society, the University of Utah, Bountiful Davis Art Center, Utah Arts Council, the Springville Museum of Art, and the Dixie University Sears Museum. He was included in the University of Utah Marriott Library Notable Utah Artist Project and has completed various commissions, including a recent pro bono mural for the University of Utah Primary Children’s Hospital Forever Young Zone. Martin Blundell’s paintings are included in private and corporate collections around the U.S.

Something Scary This way Comes Tickets
Oct 18 @ 2:30 am – 4:30 am

Red Earth Theatre brings a literary look at ghoulies and ghosties to the
Chapel at Tlaquepaque on Thursday, October 17th at 7.00 pm. Celebrating
Halloween and All Souls Night with the magic of being in the presence of
the mysterious (and yes scary), this evening of readings and music will
offer things familiar and things rarely heard.

The three weird sisters from McBeth will be present (Terra Shelman, Cat
Ransom and Joan Westmoreland) as well as Edgar Allen’s The Raven (Michael
and Candace Gallagher). Gary Every will share The Ghost of Melchior Diaz
(the Arizona version of the headless horseman) and we’ll also hear how
Ichabod handled the headless horseman in a rendition of The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow (Mitch McDermott and Blair Souter).

No venture into the Other World is complete without some words from the
Irish and who better than W.B. Yeats as he assures us the Irish believe in
the Fairies, followed by a story about the Fairy Path from The Weir by
Conor McPherson (read by Phil Oberholzer)

Poetry from Edna St Vincent Millay, T.S Eliot, Mary Elizabeth Coleridge.
Shel Silverstein, Hortense King Flexner and others will be read by Sandi
Schenholm, Nancy Lee Melmon and the other actors. Join us in singing Ghost
Riders in the Sky led by Trish Jahnke and Dan Dagget who will also offer
the haunting Long Black Veil.

Red Earth brings a wide variety of live theatre to the Verde Valley, most
recently the outdoor production Midsummer Night’s Dream and is honored to
present this monthly series of live theatre at Tlaquepaque. This series
fully meets the Red Earth mission to inspire and nurture many voices
through live performance and encourage dialogue exploring the human
experience in our diverse communities.

On November 21st Red Earth will reprise the powerful and moving Gratitude
Show and on December 19th the 60 minutes Christmas Carol returns to the
Chapel – save the date now.

As Yeats tells us, when the door swings open in the right place at the
right time ‘an unearthly troop of hurrying spirits’ pours through. Join the
throng at the Chapel in Tlaquepaque with Red Earth Theatre on Thursday,
October 17th at 7.00 pm if you dare – and allow your fairy child to play.

Suggested donation $10 at the door.

ERIC MILLER
Eric Miller was born in Alpena, Michigan, but grew up in Detroit. He began seriously playing guitar at the age of twelve, inspired by all the great rhythm-n-blues and rock-n-roll of the area. Coming from a family of musicians and artists, Eric started playing professionally when he was sixteen. In no time he was playing some of the hottest and biggest venues of the Detroit Metropolitan area.

Hungry for travel and exposure to different sounds and music, Eric left Detroit in the mid 90’s to travel to Europe where he spent months busking on the streets of France, Italy, England, Ireland, and eventually Spain. It was there that he was seduced by the art of flamenco. After returning to the states, he was privileged to meet and eventually perform with La Dama Maria del Carmen, a world-renowned flamenco dancer who has performed with such flamenco greats as maestros Carlos Montoya and Juan Serrano.
After several years of disciplined study and performance of flamenco, Eric found himself drawn towards Brazilian music, inspired by the brilliance of masters such as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Caetano Veloso. Eric says, “There is so much ocean and sun in bossa nova and samba that it is always refreshing to listen to.”
Eric has toured the Southern United States with Karren Pell, a Nashville songwriter with whom he still writes many of his songs. He also tours with the flamenco company Arte Y Pureza, playing with the band Sir Sultry in the flamenco rock opera A Spanish Day.
Most recently, Eric co-collaborated to compose music for a documentary film called The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato, Mexico for the Detroit Science Center.
Today Eric has found his own voice, emerging with an interwoven cultural style that is unique unto him. His music is diverse, and he continues to travel and play, collaborating with many great musicians around the world. Artist website: Eric Miller
